It’s application season and you need to write an up-to-date artist biography. It sounds so simple! Who is more equipped to write about you than you? Actually, organizing your artistic journey into a short story can actually be a considerable challenge.
If you are struggling, you are not alone. Here is a worksheet to get you started. If you still need help, go to our website and hire us to write it with you!
1. First answer these questions:
- What’s your name?
- Where/when were you born?
- Where do you live now?

2. Now translate this into a narrative sentence:

3. Next, answer these questions:
- What are the main themes of your work? And why?
- What is your educational or professional background? Is this important to understanding your practice? If so, how?
- How do you engage with your audience? What is your exhibition background? Have you published any books?
- Have you won any awards, honors, residencies, grants? How were these achievements meaningful to you?
- Have you served in other art-related capacities, such as being a curator, art writer, or an artists’ advocate?
